Cacao is a way out

Numerous wars and armed conflicts have thrust the Congo into an economic crisis. Its rich natural resources are trapped in an environment of violence and brutality. And ‘the rape capital of the world’, as the Eastern Congo is notoriously known, is an extremely dangerous place for women to live.

Women endure systematic atrocities that are treated as normal. The perception of women as the inferior gender, exclusion from economic decisions and forced dependency upon men for their livelihoods has caused this brutal culture to develop. Cacao is a way out.

Know your beans

Since all cacao comes originally from South America, in Africa you only find cacao which was brought there in colonial times and is therefore called Forastero (The stranger). The genetics of this cacao are still unknown, but one thing is for sure: it shows like no other how important soil, climate and skillfull processing are for the flavour of chocolate – similar to wine. The strong Femmes de Virunga 55% bar mirrors their rainforest home as well as the big learning steps of the farmers regarding fermentation and drying.

The Original Beans Femmes de Virunga project aims to improve daily life for women in North Kivu, Eastern Congo. Our goal is to establish a culturally supported economic position for women within the cacao sector. This can only work if quality assurance is developed into a female domain. On the ground, we empower women to become tree-experts through training in organic cacao-agroforestry, post-harvest handling and quality control. Moreover, we provide literacy, entrepreneurship & leadership courses for women and also developed an interactive agricultural radio program by and for women.
