PRESERVING THE CLOUD FOREST HOME OF THE SILKY TREE FROGS

MACHE CHINDUL NATURE RESERVE

With Esmeraldas Milk mit Fleur de Sel

Seidige Milchschokolade

One of the most threatened and least known rainforest ecosystems on earth

The Esmeraldas Province lies at the southernmost point of one of the most threatened and least known rainforest ecosystems on earth – the Chocó. We source our Esmeraldas cacao from Mache Chindul, the last coastal cloud forest of Ecuador which replenishes all major rivers in the region and is home to an enormous variety of plants and wildlife, including the spectacular Imbabura Tree Frog and the Mache Glas Frog.

The precious wildlife of the Chocó is severely threatened by deforestation, caused by logging and slash and burn practices from outside and from 85 small rural communities who have settled within its borders.

The Arriba Nacional makes Ecuador one of the most important fine flavour cacao growing countries. Original Ecuadorian Arriba cacao has complex aroma profiles, with strong cacao and nutty notes. But in times of hybrid cacao and cross-breedings, pure Arriba Nacional is difficult to find. In the extreme remoteness of the Mache Chindul we have found one of the most pure Arriba cacaos, represented by trees we estimate to be 80 years old.

800 hectares of highly biodiverse rainforest as a village forest reserve

Around Mache Chindul people earn money with logging and also cacao, both of which hardly earn them a livelihood. Making the local cacao market fair and equitable in our view is the most effective means to support the people and preserve the forests.

In several village communities, we help to preserve and reforest local Arriba Nacional cacao varieties and provide training in organic cacao growing, fermentation, drying and quality control. In return to our investments, the community of Mono Bravo has already committed 800 hectares of highly biodiverse rainforest as a village forest reserve.

“A fair cacao market is the most effective means to support the people and preserve the forests.”
