SAFEGUARDING WILD CACAO LANDS, HOME TO THE VIVID BLUE-THROATED MACAWS

BENI AMAZON, BOLIVIA

With Beni Wild Harvest

Lebhafte Dunkelschokolade

Discover the region

Beni Amazon, Bolivia

Made up of savanna, forest and waterways, the Beni is an archipelago of over 38 forest islands called ‘chocolatales’. This region in the Southwestern Amazon basin is marked by environmental extremes: seasons vacillate between drought and floods.

This is the only place where 100% wild cacao grows. Playing a vital role in its propagation, the last 400 specimen of the vivid blue-throated Macaw courier cacao seeds from forest island to forest island. For centuries, indigenous collectors  have sustainably harvested the Beniano cacao, which can often only be reached by boat. The region refers to itself as a traditional chocolate province, a vital heritage we are working to preserve.

Know your Beans

The Beniano, that grows endemically in the Bolivian Amazonas, was named after the river where it thrives. The very small beans that weigh just about the half of usual cacao beans, account for the fruity & flowery aroma of the Original Beans Beni Wild Harvest 66% chocolate. Because of their small size, they do not fit the industry norms, but they are exceptionally tasty – small and delicious like wild strawberries.

Learn about the project

Since 2010, Original Beans has helped protect and reforest the Beniano cacao. The preservation and direct trade of the wild Beni cacao provides indigenous people with additional income, while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding waterways and forests. Our conservation cacao strategy requires the collection and at times replanting of wild cacao across a vast area.

Wild cacao collection blends well with cattle and traditional land use, but local cacao production infrastructure needs to be built and the complex logistics of bringing this cacao from the heart of the Beni to you.

“Wild cacao provide us additional income.”
